Yateley Town Council stays in Lib Dem hands

12.32.43pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 4th May 2007

Liberal Democrats on Yateley Town Council are celebrating after winning another four-year term of office.

All 13 Liberal Democrat candidates were elected, together with an Independent and three Conservatives who took the other four seats.

Lib Dems topped the polls in every ward with other candidates trailing. Labour lost all their seats on the Town Council.

Yateley Town Council has been Liberal Democrat-run for 26 years, since Liberal candidates won a series of seats from the Conservatives in by-elections during 1980 and 1981. The Council is probably unique in that it went from an overall Conservative majority to a Liberal majority during that period purely through by-elections.

The work of the Lib Dem administration was recognised last year when Yateley was acknowledged as one of the best local councils in the country when it was awarded "Quality Parish" status at a ceremony in Winchester. The Council was told that it was "the most forward-thinking council" looked at!
