South Farnborough Lib Dems call for crossing in Queens Road10.33.19am GMT Tue 7th Nov 2006
Liberal Democrats delivered a petition to Rushmoor Borough Council and Hampshire County Council on Monday 6th November calling for a pedestrian crossing at the western end of Queens Road, Farnborough. The petition contains 230 signatures, which the local Lib Dem team has been collecting since the start of September. Dr Crispin Allard, Chairman of South Farnborough Liberal Democrats, commented, "There have been a number of near misses on this stretch of road in recent years, but up until now the Council has refused to do anything about it because there have not been enough accidents for it to qualify. We weren't prepared to wait until somebody is seriously injured or even killed. The aim of this petition was to get the Council to act now before it's too late." Crispin added, "The response on the doorsteps was really positive. I'd like to thank everyone who signed the petition." Rushmoor Borough Council has now answered the concerns of local residents and has brought forward proposals to improve pedestrian safety in the area, including the crossing called for in the petition. St Mark's Councillor Alistair Mackie said, "This is a real result. I'm absolutely delighted. We in the Liberal Democrats have been working on this for quite a few years, and it's something I've campaigned hard on. This will make it easier for schoolchildren and senior citizens to cross the road safely." The petition is still open for anyone who wants to sign it. It can be found in the September 2006 edition of St Mark's Focus, which is in the Download area of this web site.
